Statewide Test Prep & Enrichment
Our 3rd through 8th grade math and reading enrichment class focuses on both building the foundations to the common core curriculum of that grade level, as well as introducing your child to more advanced applications of those grade level concepts. Both mathematics and English Language Arts are covered in the class. Mathematics will include operations drills and word problems, while ELA focuses on reading comprehension, vocabulary, written responses, as well as grammar.
Creative Writing
Our 3rd through 7th grade creative writing class focuses on working with your child to improve his/her writing ability. The class will focus on reading and writing both fiction and nonfiction narratives, as well as opinion pieces, letters, poems, biographies and other creative writing materials. The class will also teach grammar concepts, and composition best practices. The 6th-7th grade courses will also train your child to write a cohesive essay given a chosen topic within a short time frame - as will be required during standardized exams.
SHSAT (Summer & Fall Only)
Our SHSAT classes are specifically designed to prepare your child for the SHSAT exam, that takes place at the end of October of their 8th grade year. This class will consist of 1.5 hours of math everyday and 1.5 hours of verbal every day. The math portion includes algebra, geometry, and word problems. The verbal portion includes logic reasoning and reading comprehension. Students be placed into the appropriate SHSAT level class based on their A+ Academy entrance exam score.
Public Speaking (Fall & Spring Only)
Public Speaking is an essential skill for your child. Imagine speaking to a classroom full of other students and knowing that everyone is understanding you and impressed by how comfortable, confident and relaxed you seem. Wouldn't it be nice to never again become nervous before speaking in front of class, teachers or parents? In this class, you will learn the following:
How to convey your thoughts and ideas effectively and in an engaging manner
How to relax before giving a presentation or speaking in front of a larg
audience
How to organize your thoughts and tailor your delivery to different audiences
How to deliver your perspective and rebuttal against your opponents' in debates on important topics
Each class is limited to 8 students maximum.
Mark Twain JHS (Fall only)
We offer Mark Twain preparatory courses for three of Mark Twain’s talent exams: Computer and Math, Science, and Writing. All three classes are designed specifically to prepare students for these Mark Twain exams. These are rigorous courses focusing on middle school topics and should only be attended by those who already excel in these areas. 2 full length mock exams are included in the course.
Hunter College High School Entrance Exam
Our full day Hunter class will teach both the math and reading portion of the hunter exam, as well as the mandatory essay. The morning class will be dedicated to the math and reading, while the afternoon writing class will focus on coaching the students to explore their creative side in the form of personal statements and essay writing.
