Specialized High School Admissions Test

The SHSAT is a standardized exam for admission to NYC’s Specialized High Schools. These public high schools include:

  • Bronx High School of Science
  • Brooklyn Latin School
  • Brooklyn Technical High School
  • High School of Mathematics, Science, and Engineering at City College
  • High School of American Studies at Lehman College
  • Queens High School for the Science at York
  • Staten Island Technical High School
  • Stuyvesant High School

    Admission into these high schools is only based on your SHSAT score.

    The test is 3 hours long with two sections, English Language Arts and Math.

    ELA (Reading and Writing): 57 questions total
    • 9-11 revising/editing questions
    • 3 to 4 informational texts, 1 or 2 literary prose texts, and 1 poem with 6-10 questions associated with each text.
    • 10 experimental questions
      Math: 57 questions total
      • 52 multiple-choice word problems and computational questions
      • 5 grid-in questions
      • 10 experimental questions

        The SHSAT is administered late October to 8th graders.* To receive an admission ticket to take the test, you must tell your middle school guidance counselor.
